Inside the House

Longthwaite farmhouse is not a conventional holiday house, it has been our family's second home for over 50 years and is full of many sentimental items. The house is simply furnished and is much loved and cherished by family and guests. The house is heated by night storage heaters plus a wood-burning stove in the sitting room. A plentiful supply of dry logs and kindling is available in the garage. There is a washing machine and a large larder with a drying room

Currently some mobile networks are available in the area but if yours is not, please use the telephone in the sitting room. There are four bedrooms sleeping 9, a large sitting room, a spacious kitchen/dining area, a large larder/boot room, one bathroom with bath and toilet, a shower room and one separate toilet. Hot water is provided by a 250 litre tank heated by off-peak electricity.

Pillows and duvets are provided but please bring your own sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases and towels - and hot water bottles if you wish! We ask that you leave the house as they would hope to find it - clean and tidy - and to respect the things that are there.

Once your booking is confirmed, we will send you full instructions on everything you need.

Borrowdale Weather

Longthwaite Farmhouse is situated between a river and a working farm. In the winter months it can feel cold and damp particularly when it has not been occupied for for a few weeks and occasionally, there are mice.

During the winter months especially, we recommend that on arrival visitors light the stove, leave the sitting room door open, put hot-water bottles in the beds and come prepared with plenty of warm layers. There is a plentiful supply of dry logs and the house will soon warm up once the fire gets going. If you suffer from asthma or rheumatism, the initial cold and dampness may affect you so be sure to bring the necessary medical supplies. We suggest you should aim to arrive at the house in daylight hours.

With persistent heavy rain, Borrowdale receives over 200" per year (London 25") at times the access lane to the house can become impassable where it runs close beside the river. The level may rise rapidly but recedes just as fast and access is rarely restricted for more than a few hours. On extremely rare occasions the river level reaches the flood gate at the front door. There are detailed instructions at the house about what to do in the very unlikely event that this should happen during your stay.

If the above does not put you off, then we are sure you will love it!
